Meet Smitty

My name is Jim Smith, but most people just call me Smitty. I’m 65 years old and recently retired from a long career in the shipyard trade, where I spent many years working as a machinist on submarines. It was challenging work, but it taught me precision, patience, and the satisfaction of building things the right way—skills that have carried over into my biggest passion: woodworking.

Woodworking has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. My father and grandfather were both hobby woodworkers who enjoyed it simply for the fun of creating things. Their love of working with their hands inspired me early on and planted the seeds for the passion I have today.

I’m also a proud husband, father, and grandfather. Family is at the center of everything I do, and many of the custom gifts I create are inspired by the people I love.

These days, I spend a lot of time in my garage workshop, creating handmade pieces and refining my craft. I enjoy experimenting with new techniques, learning from others, and bringing ideas to life in wood. I’m always open to suggestions, tips, or feedback—anything that helps me make a better product.

For me, woodworking isn’t just a hobby. It’s a way to stay creative, stay busy, and stay connected to the people and traditions that shaped me.
